4.3.2 Increase the number of businesses participating in the Spruce the Bruce program.
In Q2, the Spruce the Bruce program experienced strong uptake, with all available funding fully allocated. Staff collaborated with several municipalities to expand the program’s reach by supporting locally funded streams, allowing more businesses to participate beyond the County’s core funding. These partnerships helped reinforce the value of the program and demonstrated a shared commitment to downtown revitalization. The high level of engagement also highlighted opportunities to refine the process and improve accessibility for future participants.
Of the 73 applications received, 55 approved applications came from businesses, BIAs, and community organizations. 19 of these applicants were repeat recipients of Spruce the Bruce funding, having previously secured grants for new businesses, new business locations, or new eligible projects. This level of repeat participation reflects sustained business growth, continued investment, and an ongoing commitment to business improvement and expansion across the region.
Annually in Q2/Q3 the Economic Development team, in collaboration with local municipalities, conduct business walks in 17 communities across Bruce County. By engaging directly with local businesses and building strong relationships, the team is able to raise awareness of available programs and supports. Many grant recipients later identify these conversations as their introduction to the funding opportunities, noting that the early information helped their application process. Over the last 4 years a significant number of new businesses have participated in the program, as such this action is now considered complete.
